The Driving Test UPDATES - From 6th April 2010 - you'll be asked by your examiner if you'd like your instructor / accompanying driver to sit in on your test and listen to the debrief at the end of the test. (You decide :-) From October 2010 - you'll be driving for 10 minutes of the test independently. You will be advised of the independent part of the route with verbal directions (diagram if required) and you'll then be expected to follow the route without any further input from the examiner. See www.youtube.com/dsagov for more information. TEST DAY - Once the examiner has seen both parts of your driving licence, theory test certificate and test appointment letter, you'll walk together to the car, reading a number plate meantime to satisfy the eyesight requirement (5 car lengths) You'll then be asked 2 questions either show me/tell me/under the bonnet. The driving test is about 40 minutes long and includes a variety of different roads with differing speed limits up to 70mph on the Dual Carriageways. You'll be asked to follow the road ahead unless traffic signs tell you otherwise. The examiner will instruct you in good time if he/she needs you to take an alternative direction. You'll be asked to pull up safely several times throughout your test and you will also be asked to move away safely on a flat road, on a hill and also from behind a parked vehicle. The test includes 2 manoeuvres and 1 in 3 tests also include the Emergency Stop. The 2 manoeuvres will be from the following:- Turn in the Road using forward and reverse gears (formerly 3 point turn) Left/right reverse around the corner Reverse Bay / Parallel Parking (Parking behind a parked vehicle or parking within a test centre bay) When you're ready to take your test, you'll be driving forward and backwards!! independently, consistently safely and competently during lessons meaning without any help/prompting. Past pupils will tell you, I don't compromise safety therefore I won't put you forward for your test until you're independent and ready. Bear in mind, when you pass you are out on your own, so I want to satisfy myself that you will be ok without your usual passenger !! You are allowed to make up to 15 driver faults but if any of those faults are serious / dangerous you will fail. If you attain a number of faults in the same category - this can also be a serious fault. When you pass, great well done, you drove to the required standard. Now you can decide about furthering your skills on a Pass Plus course or a couple of motorway lessons. In the unlikely event you're unsuccessful, try not to get disheartened. The practical test is tough and, as many candidates can't help getting nervous on test day, they often find it hard to perform at their best and can easily be put-off by a small unforeseen event during the drive. Very few people perform on test as well as they do during their final lessons and 'mock' tests. So if at first you don't succeed ...we'll analyse what went wrong so you will next time..... |
